America’s athletes depend upon National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to help them reach their dreams at the GamesEach and every day, National Governing Bodies work to promote and develop sport within the United States. NGBs support athletes at all levels, from grassroots to Olympic and Paralympic, by providing opportunities to compete and helping them reach their potential, achieve their dreams and represent their country.In leading up to the next Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, we wish to recognize the NGBs for their ongoing efforts to build the teams and sports you will see profiled on the world’s stage in February and March. With their hearts pounding away at three beats per second biathletes ski into the shooting range and try to hit a target the size of a softball 165 feet away. Scarcely breathing between each shot top biathletes hit five targets in under seven seconds and then ski as fast as they can to the finish line. The 500-year-old sport of curling has its roots in the same country that gave the world golf — Scotland. Curling, an ice sport of fitness and finesse, is in fact a lot like winter golf, with competitors reading the ice like a golfer reads greens, and teams setting up one shot with another as they try to out-duel their opponents in strategy and tactics. Imagine speeding down an iced track with banked walls, feet first, driving a three foot long sled, four inches above the ice, while exceeding speed of 90 MPH…and trying to resist the temptation to look where you’re going. This is luge the fastest sport on ice. After winning silver and gold in 1998 and 2002, USA Luge narrowly missed the medals in 2006 with two fourth place finishes. The US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) provides opportunities for athletes in the most exciting Olympic sports. Its programs provide education, development and competition opportunities for young athletes. The USSA provides athletic programs in six sports including alpine skiing, cross country, adaptive alpine and cross country, freestyle, ski jumping and nordic combined and snowboarding. Programs are implemented through a national network of 400 USSA clubs.
